Student Moves in Edmonton: How to Move Cheaply Before and During Winter

If you are a student in Edmonton, moving usually happens at the worst times: the end of a lease, the start of a semester, or right when the weather turns cold. You are on a budget, you probably do not own a truck, and your friends already helped you move last year. Here is how to keep a student move cheap and simple, especially if it falls in the colder months.

Start with how much stuff you really have

Most student moves are small: a bed, a desk, a dresser, a few boxes and some bags. Before you book anything, walk through your place and make a quick list. If everything fits in a few rooms, a small move may cost less than you expect. Apartment moves with The Squad Movers typically run about $350 to $500, and we can quote you a flat rate or hourly billing with a 3-hour minimum. Ask for a free quote, online or on site, so you know the number before moving day.

Split the cost with your roommates

If you and a roommate are moving on the same day, book one crew for both places. You split the cost, and you only have to coordinate once. Even moving out of the same building on the same afternoon can save you each a good chunk of the bill.

Pick your date carefully

The last day of the month is the busiest time for movers, because most leases end then. If your lease allows it, aim for a weekday or the middle of the month. Dates open up sooner and are easier to get. Booking two to four weeks ahead is a good habit, and it matters even more before the holidays and the winter semester.

Book the elevator and parking

Many Edmonton apartments and condos make you reserve the elevator, and some limit the hours. Ask your building manager or landlord early, and ask where the truck can park. This is one of the most common reasons a move runs late. We do not charge extra for stairs or elevators, so you only need to sort out the booking.

Plan for the cold

Edmonton winters are hard on belongings. Electronics, plants and anything that can crack or freeze should not sit in a cold truck or on a cold sidewalk longer than they have to. Keep laptops, monitors and phones with you if you can, and wrap plants well. Clear snow and ice from the walkway and the entrance before the crew arrives. It is safer for everyone, and it keeps your move on time. Short winter days also mean you should start in the morning.

Pack smart and keep an essentials bag

  • Pack heavy things like books in small boxes so they are easy to lift.
  • Label every box with the room it goes in.
  • Keep a bag with your charger, medications, keys, documents and one change of clothes with you, not on the truck.
  • Take photos of your old place when you leave, in case there is a question about your damage deposit.

If you need boxes or packing materials, ask us when you book.

Furniture that comes apart

Beds, desks and shelves are easier to move when they are taken apart. We disassemble and reassemble furniture at no extra charge, so you do not have to hunt for an Allen key on moving day.
